Bonus For Illinois Airport Director Despite Big Losses

Wednesday, 09 April 2014 10:50 Published in Local News
MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) - The director of a southwestern Illinois airport that has never turned a profit since opening with great fanfare 16 years ago has gotten a pay raise as well as a bonus of more than $13,000.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports Tim Cantwell oversees MidAmerica St. Louis Airport near Mascoutah. His earnings jumped nearly 5 percent last year to roughly $128,000.
The newspaper says Cantwell got his bonus in January for meeting unspecified goals.

St. Clair County owns the airport, and Cantwell oversees its 14 employees and manages a $5.5 million budget.
MidAmerica has struggled since opening in 1998, and critics persistently have labeled it a $330 million boondoggle.
A message left Wednesday for Cantwell by The Associated Press was not immediately returned.

Defendant Admits To Shooting But Pleads Not Guilty

Wednesday, 09 April 2014 10:45 Published in Local News
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A man accused of shooting the financial aid director of a downtown St. Louis business college has told a jury that he did it, ignoring the advice of his attorney.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Sean Johnson testified at his trial Tuesday. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and possession of a defaced firearm.

The shooting happened Jan. 15, 2013, prompting a lockdown at Stevens Institute of Business & Arts.

Johnson told the jury that he didn't intend to kill anyone. He says he was upset because his student loans were running out a few credits short of graduating.

Financial aid director Greg Elsenrath survived the attack.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Move over, baseball. Busch Stadium will host an event next month featuring America's real national pastime - eating.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a qualifying event for the Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at New York's Coney Island will take place May 17 at Busch Stadium, prior to a Cardinals game.

The hot dog-eating contest starts at noon, with the Cardinals hosting the Atlanta Braves at 1:15 p.m. The top male and female contenders will advance to the New York contest.
