Residents out as two St. Ann apt. buildings condemned

Tuesday, 29 October 2013 01:19 Published in Local News

Residents of two St. Ann apartment buildings found themselves unexpectedly homeless Monday night.

The City of St. Ann condemned two buildings at the Colonial Apartments complex on Geraldine Avenue.  KSDK-TV reports that one has sewer problems and the other, electrical problems.

Residents told the TV station they were given only about an hour to grab what they could and get out.  Others came home from work Monday to find themselves locked out.

St. Ann police have stepped up patrols in the area to prevent looting while residents wait to get back in to gather their things.

The St. Louis Community College system has new leadership.  Interim Chancellor Dennis Michaelis began his new job Monday.

The former Texas college officials was tapped to replace Myrtle Dorsey, who left in late September after the Board of Trustees voted not to renew her contract.

Michaelis told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he doesn't expect to hold the post for more than 18 months.  He Said his focus will be on improving communications and rebuilding the public image of the system.

The college's image suffered a blow after the bungling of the investigation of a student assault on the Meramec campus in April became known.

George Wassen, president of the Meramec campus, resigned shortly after the attack.  The police chief at Meramec and two other officials were fired.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Former Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton, a champion of the military who served 17 terms in the U.S. House before losing a re-election bid in 2010, has died. He was 81.

Skelton died Monday at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., surrounded by family and friends, including longtime colleague Russell Orban.

The cause was not immediately released, but Orban says Skelton entered the hospital a week earlier with a cough. Oban confirmed Skelton's death to The Associated Press.

The Lexington, Mo., native was a Democrat and former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

Skelton lost to Republican Vicky Hartzler in 2010 in western Missouri's 4th Congressional District. He then joined the law firm of Kansas City-based Husch Blackwell, working in its offices in Kansas City and Washington.
