Missouri lawmakers to examine medical lawsuit limits

Monday, 16 December 2013 12:14 Published in Local News
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri lawmakers plan to try again to limit how much money people can receive in medical malpractice lawsuits.

Missouri House Speaker Tim Jones says the liability limits are a priority for the 2014 session. And Rep. Eric Burlison, of Springfield, already is promoting a bill.

Republican lawmakers want to reinstate a $350,000 limit on noneconomic damages such as pain and suffering that was struck down by the Missouri Supreme Court in July 2012.

The court said the limit violated a common-law right to seek damages for medical malpractice that predated the adoption of a state constitution in 1820.

The proposed legislation would abolish that common-law right and instead make medical liability lawsuits subject to state law.

A similar bill stalled earlier this year in the Senate.

Lawsuit aimed at FutureGen pollution standards

Monday, 16 December 2013 12:11 Published in Local News
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Sierra Club has filed a federal lawsuit aimed at tightening the pollution controls planned for the FutureGen clean-coal project.

The environmental group argues In the lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Springfield that the project needs to meet tougher standards for preventing the release of pollutants into the air.

Jack Darin is director of the Sierra Club's Illinois chapter. He told Lee Enterprises' Springfield Bureau that the group remains skeptical that the project's promise of clean coal is possible.

The $1.3 billion project intends to use primarily federal funds to refit a coal-fired power plant in Meredosia in western Illinois. Carbon dioxide from the coal used at the plant would be pumped underground and stored.

The FutureGen Alliance said it was reviewing the lawsuit.

Fire fighters will be on the scene through much of the night after a 4-alarm fire destroyed most of a warehouse in downtown St. Louis.

A spokesman for the fire department says the fire has been contained, but crews will remain on site to cool off any hot spots. The blaze began around 11:30 this morning at the Servco warehouse just south of the Poplar Street Bridge. Everyone in the building was able to evacuate safely. The fire sent plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen for miles. The top two floors of the building collapsed. At the height of the blaze more than 80 firefighters were on scene.

No word on what caused the fire.
