ST. LOUIS (AP) - A former St. Louis mayor is accused of mishandling clients' funds through his law firm.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Freeman Bosley Jr. is facing disciplinary action from the Missouri Supreme Court.

A complaint was filed with the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel in June but just made public. The counsel investigates allegations of misconduct by lawyers.

Bosley was St. Louis' first black mayor, elected in 1993. He lost a 1997 re-election bid and went into private law practice.

Bosley's attorney, Michael Downey, says the allegations involve money-management issues related to the trust account of Bosley's firm. He says Bosley accepts responsibility for the mistakes, but says none of Bosley's clients were deprived of any money due to them.

Area residents should be on the lookout as a Chesterfield grandmother fell victim to a scam.

Police say the woman was contacted by a group of scammers who told her that her grandson was being held in a foreign prison. The woman says that over a series of phone calls, she was convinced to wire a quarter-of-a-million dollars to a bank in Peru.

Chesterfield police say they have not received other reports of similar scams, but residents should still be aware.

2 central Illinois men accused of Caterpillar theft

Tuesday, 17 September 2013 12:13 Published in Local News

EAST PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Two central Illinois men are facing charges after authorities say they stole more than $1 million in equipment from Caterpillar Inc.

John R. Peters, 50, of East Peoria, and 35-year-old Eliot J. Wells, of Peoria, are each being held on $500,000 bond in the Tazewell County Jail. Both have ties to the Peoria-based heavy equipment maker. Peters used to work for Caterpillar, while Wells is a current employee.

Court document show the stolen machinery was being sold on eBay.

It wasn't clear if the two men had retained attorneys. Peters' phone rang unanswered Tuesday. Meanwhile, Wells' number wasn't listed.

Caterpillar officials said in a statement that they're working with authorities as part of the investigation into the thefts.
