Cards patience with young pitchers pays off

Sunday, 20 October 2013 11:31 Published in Local News

ST. LOUIS (AP) — At the trade deadline in July, the Cardinals appeared to be in the market for starting pitching. Instead, St. Louis stood pat and trusted their young arms.

That trust paid off — in a trip to the World Series.

Led by NLCS MVP Michael Wacha, the group of 20-somethings has formed a core of one of the best staffs in the major leagues.

Wacha outpitched Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw twice in the NLCS, including in a 9-0 win in Game 6 on Friday night.

Ace Adam Wainwright says the kid has been so good he wouldn't be surprised if Wacha was on the mound for Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday at the Boston Red Sox.

Belleville hosting film shoot next Friday

Sunday, 20 October 2013 11:27 Published in Local News

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Belleville is going Hollywood.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that filming of a new movie required the public square in the southwestern Illinois city east of St. Louis to be closed to traffic for about an hour Friday.

The film, titled "Belleville," is by Ted Trentman, a Belleville native who typically makes movies closer to his Los Angeles digs. But Trentman opted to use his hometown as the setting for his latest work.

There's no immediate word about the movie's plot or when the film will be released.

NJ offices add hours for marriage sign up

Saturday, 19 October 2013 10:08 Published in National News

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — City halls in several New Jersey cities and towns are adding extra office hours today to accept marriage license applications for same-sex couples.

The state's highest court says the marriages can start Monday. Jersey City, Hoboken, and Asbury Park clerk's offices will be open today.

Gov. Chris Christie says he disagrees with the state Supreme Court ruling to recognize same-sex marriages in the state, but he will comply with the decision. He says the people, rather than the courts, should have been the ones to decide the issue.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen.-elect Cory Booker says he will officiate at weddings of both gay and heterosexual couples as the mayor of Newark. Booker was elected this week to the Senate and has been a strong supporter of gay rights.
