Missouri budget coming higher than expected

Monday, 04 November 2013 12:21 Published in Local News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri budget officials say the state's tax revenues have increased 2.5 percent through the first four months of the current fiscal year.

The state Office of Administration on Monday reported net general revenues through October. The state's current budget took effect July 1 and runs through next June.

For the current budget year so far, state corporate income and franchise taxes are up more than 26 percent. Individual income taxes are up 3.8 percent and sales taxes have increased 4.4 percent.

Alton Middle School will be closed  Tuesday due to a gas leak.

The leak was discovered late Monday morning.  The school was closed and students sent home around 11:00 a.m.

Ameren crews thought they had contained the leak, but it's turning out to be a little tougher to repair than originally thought.  So classes are cancelled while crews continue to work on it.

School officials say the closure is precautionary, since only a small amount of natural gas was detected inside the building.

Poll: Older Americans nix Social Security change

Sunday, 03 November 2013 08:59 Published in National News

CHICAGO (AP) — A poll shows strong opposition among older Americans to most proposals that would cut Social Security benefits.

The survey by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that about 6 in 10 people age 50 and older oppose changing the way cost-of-living raises are calculated or gradually raising the eligibility age for full Social Security benefits.

Many want more generous benefits. About one-third believes the eligibility age for full benefits should be below 65.

Respondents show more willingness to support proposals that primarily would impact high-earners.

About 4 in 10 people 50 and older support reducing benefits for seniors with higher incomes. About 6 in 10 support raising the cap on income subject to Social Security taxes.
