Services for Willow Long to be held Monday

Friday, 13 September 2013 06:53 Published in Local News

Services for 7 year old Willow Long will be held in her hometown  of Watson, Illinois on Monday. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church.  A visitation is scheduled to take place Saturday at the Hearts Rock Cafe in Effingham High School from 5 to 9 p.m.  Willow's uncle, 22 year old Justin DeRyke, was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder. Prosecutors say he told investigators he killed his niece to end her suffering after she accidentally fell onto a brush pile and pierced her neck with a stick. DeRyke is being held on $5 million bond and hiring an attorney. He's set to appear again in court next Thursday.

Integrity Village homeless camp set to return

Tuesday, 10 September 2013 09:13 Published in Local News

Homeless advocate Reverend Larry Rice is back, this time hoping to reestablish Integrity Village at same site that was condemned by the city last year. The city shut down the homeless camp at Vandeventer and I-44 in May of last year, citing public health concerns and no occupancy permits as reasons for condemnation. Rice and three others were arrested that night after refusing to vacate the property. A prayer tent is expected to be pitched Tuesday after a recent court ruling said Rice can once again practice religion on the property.
