St. Louis County crime lab opens

Friday, 08 November 2013 11:05 Published in Local News

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - A new crime laboratory is now open in St. Louis County, several weeks later than anticipated and costing about $2 million more than projected.

Police officials told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1cIioXh ) that the lab that opened this week will help cut backlogs.

The lab has been at the center of problems. The delay came after Gregory Sansone, a partner in a subcontracting company called SM Mechanical, temporarily lost a heating and cooling license after his business partner quit. That halted work for several weeks.

Sansone was county police board chairman, and there was concern about whether his firm should have received the contract in the first place. It was paid $3.7 million for the work. Sansone resigned, as did two of the four other members.

"Trooper" the dog up for adoption

Thursday, 07 November 2013 07:14 Published in Local News

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A pit bull-mix puppy that was dragged down Interstate 55 near St. Louis while tied to pickup truck is now up for adoption.

The dog, named Trooper, needed dozens of surgeries after he nearly died while being dragged down the highway for nearly a mile in November 2012.

The Humane Society of Missouri announced Wednesday it is accepting only online applications to adopt Trooper. It will take applications through Nov. 17.

Benetta Johnson of East St. Louis, Ill., was sentenced to probation and community service after being found guilty in April of misdemeanor animal abuse.

Authorities say when she tried to return the dog to her ex-husband, her son tied the puppy to a trailer hitch.  Johnson's ex-husband didn't see the dog and drove down the interstate.

Warner's Warm-up Coat Drive accepting large donation

Wednesday, 06 November 2013 07:26 Published in Local News

Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner continues to have a positive impact in the community through his charity that provides winter coats to those in need. Today Warner's Warm-up Coat Drive received a large donation from a local textile recycling company. USAgain has been collecting gently used coats at its 400-plus recycling bins around the city. Sunny Schaefer is the executive director of Operation Food Search, a partner with Warner's charity.

"We are being deluged with people calling looking for coats for children, their grandmother, so many people are struggling right now," Schaefer said. "This couldn't have come at a better time."

Warner's Warm-Up was founded in 2001. A complete list of locations where you can drop off winter coats for donation can be found at Kurt and Brenda Warner's website, kurtwarner.org.
