Winter Storm Watch issued for St. Louis

Friday, 22 March 2013 06:42 Published in Local News
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday evening. Precipitation will initially overspread the area late Saturday afternoon and evening and will be in the form of rain. As colder air builds southward Saturday night. The rain will change to snow and become heavy at times, especially after midnight. Snow will then continue through much of the day on Sunday. Accumulations will be 5 to 8 inches of snow possible with locally higher amounts. Here are more weather stats from the National Weather Service: Winds: North 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Impact: Snow will have the potential to not only accumulate on roads but accumulate at a rapid pace. the snowfall will likely greatly reduce visibilities at times and result in snow packed and slick roads...making travel hazardous. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A winter storm watch is advanced notice that severe winter weather is possible in the watch area. It does not mean it is a certainty. Those in the watch area should begin preparing in case the storm does materialize. If you have travel planned...you may want to adjust your travel time to avoid the storm. Also, you should use this advanced notice to make certain your vehicle is winterized. Make preparations at home by stocking emergency supplies, such as food, medicine and extra heating fuel, just in case the storm makes travel impossible. This is especially important for those living in rural areas.

Joplin tornado-school reconstruction

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — Crews have started rebuilding a high school destroyed when a deadly tornado swept through Joplin in May 2011.

Broadcaster KOAM reports that the first structural beams for the school were dropped into place Wednesday. This was the first work visible to the community on a building that Superintendent C.J. Huff calls the hub of the community.

Previous work on utilities and footings for the 504,000-square-foot building was largely done underground.

Huff watched as a crane moved the beams into place. He says the work is good for the community to see.

The tornado that destroyed the school hit soon after an offsite graduation ceremony. One graduate was sucked out of a vehicle and killed.

Since then, older students have been attending classes in a converted

Three people were able to escape a fire that swept through their Troy, Illinois home just before 5:00am Thursday. Firefighters remained at 31 Stonebrooke in Troy, Illinois for three hours.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the home by neighbors. Fox 2 reports three people got out safely. They are Annie Herrin, her daughter Courtney and her boyfriend, Paul Coopman. Coopman reportedly was awakened by an explosion coming from the garage and was able to get the women out safely. There's still no word on a cause but firefighters are not considering it a suspicious fire.

Fox 2 reports three months ago the family buried Annie's husband, 47-year-old Jimmy Herrin, died from pancreatic cancer. A trust fund for the family has been set up at US Bank in Troy, Illinois.
