Woman critical after ATV hit by train

A metro-east woman is in critical condition after being struck by a train near Granite City Tuesday night.  Police say it happened about 9 p.m. at Lenox and Chouteau in Mitchell, Illinois.

A couple had reportedly been riding an all-terrain vehicle when it got stuck on railroad tracks.  The man was able to jump out of the way of the on-coming train, but the women couldn't.

The woman was struck and later airlifted to a hospital.  The man wasn't hurt.

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) — A local resident of the town where a train derailed, killing 78 people, says the driver said minutes after the crash that he had been going fast and couldn't brake.

In a television interview broadcast Sunday afternoon by Antena 3, Evaristo Iglesias said he and another person accompanied Francisco Jose Garzon Amo to a stretch of flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Iglesias says, "he told us that he wanted to die."

He adds that Garzon said he "had been going fast" and "he said he had needed to brake but couldn't."

Garzon is expected to give testimony to an investigating judge later Sunday.

CHAFFEE, Mo. (AP) — A federal agency has sent investigators to southeast Missouri, where seven people were injured when two cargo trains collided on tracks under a highway overpass, causing the overpass to partially collapse.

Scott County Sheriff's Office Dispatcher Clay Slipis said the collision happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday near Chaffee when a Union Pacific train hit a Burlington Northern train. Slipis said several cars derailed and hit a pillar of the Highway M overpass, bringing it down. Two cars were on that stretch of road.

Seven people — five in the vehicles and both train conductors — were taken to a hospital. Slipis said all but one was treated and released; the seventh is in good condition.

The National Transportation Safety Board says it's sent a crew to investigate the cause.

Philadelphia praises train station hero

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Christopher Knafelc (kuh-NAY-ful) was a recovering drug addict with a long rap sheet who often wondered if he was a good person, and perhaps never considered that anyone thought he was a hero.

<br><br>

But that was before he leaped onto the tracks to help a stranger he'd just seen fall off the platform at a Philadelphia train station.

<br><br>

He called up to people on the platforms to get the trains stopped, knowing one would be arriving soon.

<br><br>

Now, the 32-year-old Knafelc is being hailed as a hero and he's holding his head a little higher. He's taking the praise from his good deed as another sign that he's on the right path in life.

<br><br>

Still, Knafelc says he was just doing the "right thing."
