Ground broken on Belleville 9-11 memorial

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Ground has been broken for a September 11 memorial in southern Illinois.
The Belleville News Democrat reports the ceremony was Tuesday in Belleville on city-owned property near a firehouse. The September 11 Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois will be built. Organizers hope to have the project finished by Sept. 11 of this year.
The centerpiece of the memorial will be a 7,100-pound steel column from the World Trade Center.
There also will be a Flight 93 Memorial, a timeline of the terrorist attacks and a memorial in the shape of a pentagon.
Organizers have raised $80,000 for the project. They hoped to raise $100,000 before breaking ground.

HIGHLAND, Ill. (AP) — Family and friends of an 18-year-old southwestern Illinois man who died after being found unconscious at a University of Missouri dorm are saying their final goodbyes.

Services for Gregory Holthaus were scheduled for Friday in his hometown of Highland.

Police at the University of Missouri in Columbia say Holthaus was visiting students at the Pershing group of residence halls when he was found unresponsive October 13th. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police have said there was no indication of foul play, but the death is being investigated.

Holthaus graduated earlier this year from Highland High School, where he played varsity football and baseball. He was enrolled at a technical college.

Highland is about 30 miles northeast of St. Louis.

Memorial service planned for Nancy Lanza

KINGSTON, N.H. (AP) - A memorial service is planned in New Hampshire for the mother of the gunman who killed 20 students and six educators at a Connecticut elementary school before turning the gun on himself.

Adam Lanza shot his mother to death at their home just before his December rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

The police chief in Kingston, N.H., where Nancy Lanza once lived, says a memorial service is planned for her Saturday at First Congregational Church. He says only friends and family are invited.

A private funeral for Lanza was held in town less than a week after the Dec. 14 shootings.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The Colorado prisons chief shot to death at his home last month has been honored in his native state and the college town where he lived for nearly three decades.

More than 400 friends, family members and former Missouri co-workers of Tom Clements packed Friday afternoon's memorial service at Woodcrest Chapel in Columbia, where he had been a youth minister.

Clements was a St. Louis native who worked for the Missouri Department of Corrections for 31 years before taking the top prisons job in Colorado in 2011. He rose through the ranks from a probation and parole officer in St. Louis to an administrative job overseeing Missouri's 21 adult prisons.

Colorado officials are investigating whether a violent white supremacist gang based in that state's prison system was behind the killing.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Thousands are expected to attend a public memorial service Monday for former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, who was killed at a Texas shooting range allegedly by a young veteran he was trying to help.

Mourners will gather at Cowboys Stadium to pay tribute to the 38 year old who was reputed to be the deadliest sniper in American military history.

Kyle left the Navy in 2009 after four tours of duty in Iraq and wrote the best-selling book "American Sniper."

Twenty-five year old Iraq War veteran Eddie Ray Routh has been charged with killing Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield at a gun range Feb. 2.

Kyle will be buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin after a 200 mile funeral procession starting in the Dallas area Tuesday morning.
