UM board weighing 2014 tuition hikes

Tuition is probably going up at all four University of Missouri campuses next year.

The university's Board of Curators met yesterday at the UMSL campus to begin weighing a recommendation that an increase be tied to the nation's inflation rate.  The rate is based on the Consumer Price Index for December and won't be known until next month.  The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that budget projections expect it to be about 1.7 percent.

The board could vote on the amount of the increase in January.

Some non-resident students will pay even more.  Graduate and undergraduate students the Columbia campus will see a 3 percent hike.  And graduate students at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla will pay 6 percent more next fall.

Students in the Normandy School District are getting an unexpected three-day weekend thanks to a water main that burst near the UMSL campus Thursday.

The main has been repaired, but a boil order is in effect for about 2,200 Missouri American water customers.  That includes parts of Bel Ridge, Belle Rive, Bel Nor, Normandy and St. John.

As a result, all schools in the Normandy School District will be closed Friday.

Other schools in the affected area are open, but school leaders are asking students to bring a bottle of drinking water with them.

The UMSL campus had shut down on Thursday because of the break, canceling day and evening classes. University officials say even though they are still under a boil order, classes will resume Friday morning.

Missouri American officials say they hope to life the boil order Friday afternoon.

Retired UMSL prof found dead in Utah canyon

A hiker found dead in Canyonlands National Park in Utah last week is being identified as a 73 year old St. Louis man.  The University of Missouri's website says Grant Welland was a retired UMSL professor.

His body was recovered Saturday in Horseshoe Canyon. The remote canyon is famous for its ancient rock art.  Welland had been hiking alone. Welland was reported missing Friday, five days into his trek.

Wayne County sheriff's deputies say Welland had been carrying enough water and had good hiking shoes.

The Utah medical examiner will determine a cause of death.
