SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) — An innovative training program that prepares prison inmates for jobs in the tech sector has expanded.

The rigorous, six-month course was launched at San Quentin State Prison north of San Francisco by a pair of successful Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.

The program is "bootstrapping," as its organizers say, with just 12 graduates in its first two years, but a new session began this month at the Los Angeles Twin Towers Correctional Facility.

The program uses local experts as volunteer instructors, teaching carefully selected prisoners to design and launch technology firms.

The five graduates released so far have landed real jobs at real dot-coms.

Silicon Valley tank collection heading east

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The family of a Silicon Valley engineer who amassed one of the nation's most extensive historic military vehicle collections is giving the tanks, missile launchers and armored vehicles to a Massachusetts-based museum that will preserve and display some of them.

Until now, the $30 million fleet of tanks has been refurbished and housed in seven storage sheds on a family estate up a winding, forested road above Silicon Valley; they are visited only under privately arranged tours.

But in a deal inked on July 4 and announced Monday in honor of Veteran's Day, the 240 pieces have been signed over to The Collings Foundation, which preserves historic military aircraft and now plans to add a new military vehicle museum at its Stow, Mass., headquarters.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The Silicon Valley has had a men's fashion problem dating back to its founders.

Tech companies from their inception went out of their way to be different from the rest of the corporate world. No more top-down management, no more cubicles — and no more business suits.

Thus leather sandals, elastic-waist jeans and baggy, faded T-shirts became ubiquitous, and brilliant innovation took place in the dumpiest of outfits.

But that's changing as a younger generation of engineers and designers have arrived in outfits that coordinate, and the market has responded to this new attitude among the region's rising nerds, geeks and hackers with new online men's stores, personal style consultants and an array of high-end shops at Northern California's biggest mall.
