ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Southern Illinois University system's new president says he understands feelings of betrayal surrounding his planned departure from Ohio's Youngstown State just seven months into that job.

But Randy Dunn says that as a former Illinois schools chief who once worked at SIU in Carbondale, he believes critics eventually will appreciate his chance to return to where he calls his home.

The SIU board on Monday introduced Dunn as Glenn Poshard's successor.

Dunn's three-year contract at Youngstown State requires him to give 180 days notice that he's leaving that job. That would take him through mid-August, though it's unclear if that university's board will hold him to that.

As an Ohio state lawmaker from Youngstown, Rep. Bob Hagan, says Dunn's abrupt departure leaves that university and region hurt and disappointed.

SIU team spends night in church after storm

TUSCOLA, Ill. (AP) - Southern Illinois' men's basketball team is heading back to campus after spending the night on the floor of a central Illinois church.

The Salukis were on their way home to Carbondale after a 66-48 loss at Illinois State when their bus got stuck in snowdrifts on Interstate 57 Sunday evening.

A tow truck pulled the bus from the side the road hours later and the two dozen players and staff members spent the night sleeping in a Tuscola church.

Tom Weber is the school's assistant athletics director for media services. He says the players started traveling again around 6:30 a.m. after stocking up on food But heavy snow in central Illinois meant the bus was only traveling about 15 mph.

He says road conditions are "very, very bad."

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Classes at Southern Illinois University are canceled because of a storm that's left a slick layer of ice under several inches of snow, with more wintry weather on the way.

WSIU Radio reports that some services at the 18,000-student Carbondale university were to remain open Friday, including dining services for students, the Morris Library and the student recreation center.

University administrators called off Friday's classes because of questionable driving conditions.

National Weather Service forecasters say parts of the region could get a foot of snow by the time a storm moves through the region.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday.

Late couple leaves large donation for SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Disabled students studying science and engineering at Southern Illinois University will have scholarships compliments of a $1.3 million gift from a late couple.

The Carbondale university says scholarships from the money donated by SIU alumnus James Greenwood and his wife, Martha, will begin in the fall of next year.

James Greenwood died in 2009, and his wife died in January.

James Greenwood graduated from SIU in the 1960s, after enrolling there because it was among few universities that could accommodate his wheelchair.

Greenwood went on to work for IBM for 29 years.

A metro-east state senator says he'll file legislation to have the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees disbanded.

Alton Senator Bill Haine says the governor needs to start over after board member Roger Herrin tried to have himself appointed as chairman.

Yesterday's board meeting in Carbondale ended early when trustee Marquita Wiley of Belleville and SIU-Edwardsville student trustee David Hamilton walked out in protest. The two objected to the election of officers, saying no chair should be chosen until Governor Quinn and the Illinois Senate fill three vacant board seats.

The walkout effectively stopped Herrin's election, because with only five seats currently filled, Wiley and Hamilton's absences meant the board didn't have a quorum.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A scheduled meeting of the Southern Illinois University system's board fizzled because Gov. Pat Quinn's bid to replace three of the panel's members didn't leave enough members to convene.

The Thursday morning meeting was canceled for lack of quorum because of the three vacancies and the absence of a fourth trustee.

That came a day after the Illinois Senate overwhelmingly rejected Quinn's appointments of three replacements for three board members whose terms expired last month.

Wednesday's failed ratification vote continues a year-old power struggle at SIU.

The rift dates to early last year when the SIU board refused to give Quinn-appointed Roger Herrin another term as chairman. The board contended he was too involved in day-to-day operations. Those who voted to oust Herrin included the three members Quinn replaced this week.
