A couple of local men are going toe-to-toe in federal court in St. Louis. At the heart of the issue is a patent infringement lawsuit against payments startup Square Inc.
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the suit reflects a long-simmering legal battle over Square's technology.
Robert Morley, an associate professor in Washington University’s engineering department, is suing Square and its co-founders Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey, claiming that he was unfairly cut out of the Square enterprise after developing key software.
Square is a small plastic device that plugs into mobile devices including smartphones and iPads and processes credit card transactions.
Morley alleges breach of fiduciary duty, patent infringement and fraud against Square and its co-founders.
Morley seeks an unspecified amount of damages.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A Washington University electrical engineering professor is suing credit card processor Square Inc. in the latest legal dispute over the company's mobile plug-in technology.

Robert E. Morley Jr. sued Square and company founders Jack Dorsey and James McKelvey Jr. Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.  The patent infringement suit calls the Square origin story a "fabrication" and says the two men squeezed Morley out of the San Francisco-based company.

Dorsey is a St. Louis native and chairman at Twitter. McKelvey is a WashU graduate who still lives in the St. Louis area. Square and its co-founders sued Morley in 2010 in a related patent dispute that remains pending.

NEW YORK (AP) - Disney is adding Twitter Chairman and Square CEO Jack Dorsey to its board of directors.

Walt Disney Co. says Dorsey is joining the board effective immediately. He will stand for election to a full term at the company's annual meeting on March 18.

Dorsey, 37, co-founded Twitter Inc. and sent the first Tweet in March 2006. He has been chairman of the company since 2008 and was also Twitter's first CEO. He founded mobile payment processor Square Inc. in 2009 and is CEO of that company.

Dorsey will replace Judith Estrin on Disney's board. Estrin has been on the board for 15 years and can't run for a new term under the Burbank, Calif., company's corporate rules. She is a former executive for Cisco Systems and now runs JLABS LLC.

St. Louis native Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and Square, can now add comic book superhero to his resume.

The St Louis Business Journal reports Dorsey is the latest in a series of celebrities and technology entrepreneurs to be featured in a comic book biography published by Bluewater Productions. The company is behind comic books that retell the story of The Beatles, Lady Gaga and President Barack Obama’s dog Bo Obama.

The comic book on sale today features a billionaire bachelor who gets a Tweet at a San Francisco cheese expo that ultimately leads to a battle with the forces of evil to save the world from a mad scientist.  St. Louis and the Arch are featured in the story line.

Comic Flea Market is selling the book for $3.99 or online on iTunes, Nook, Amazon and other digital outlets for $1.99.
