A metro-east school district is trying to determine if one of its teachers helped students cheat on state achievement tests last year.  The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Highland Community Unit School District 5 has launched an internal investigation this week.

Superintendent Michael Sutton tells the paper they're investigating allegations from some students that point toward "testing irregularity" during administration of the Illinois Standard Achievement Test last school year (2012-13). The teacher under investigation isn't being identified.

The district's findings will be submitted to the state Board of Education which will make a final determination.

Metro-east police say the death of a Worchester, NY woman inside a gas station restroom was probably drug related.

Madison County Sheriff Robert Hertz says 25 year old Angela Lamar, a Belleville native, had been traveling through Illinois with her boyfriend, a truck driver, when the couple stopped at a gas station along I-70 just outside of Highland.

Lamar was unresponsive when she was found inside the station restroom around 1:00 a.m. Sunday.  She was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that investigators seized a syringe and heroin-filled capsules during their investigation.  Sheriff Hertz says investigators suspect a drug overdose, but toxicology tests are still pending.

Two more districts have joined the growing list of metro-east school districts that plan to lay off teachers and other staff. Belleville District 118 and Highland Community Unit District 5 both announced staff layoffs Tuesday due to the state's budget shortfall.

District 118 will lay off six teachers and 20 staff members. The state of Illinois owes the district nearly two-million dollars.

In Highland, several teachers are being let go, but the specifics haven't been released.

Earlier this week, officials with Belleville District 201 and the Collinsville School District announced layoffs.

Two Highland, Illinois sisters are safe after one of them shot an attacking intruder. It happened about 3:30 Sunday morning at the Senior Plaza Apartments on Eagle Way Drive.

Fifty-five year old Debbie Keeny told police that she'd stepped outside for a smoke and when she turned to go back inside, a man forced his way into her apartment. She says he pushed her to the floor and then attacked her sister, 47 year old Donna Carlyle. The man reportedly choked Carlyle and demanded money.

Keeny says she grabbed her derringer pistol and warned the man that she'd shoot if he didn't let go of her sister. The man didn't stop, so she fired a warning shot. When he still didn't let go, she shot him in the back.

Police say the 33 year old suspect, a man from Troy, Illinois, is in critical condition with two gunshot wounds.

Police believe robbery was the motive, since several of the sister's neighbors at the Senior Plaza Apartments report hearing someone jiggle their doorknobs shortly before the attack.
