The back and forth controversy surrounding Caseyville Police Chief Jose Alvarez may not end with Wednesday night's board meeting.  That's when board members are expected to vote on whether or not to fire the chief.

Alvarez has already been fire twice by the mayor, and reinstated once by the village board, and once by a judge.  He tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he plans to appeal if the board does fire him.

Alvarez contends that local radio personality Bob Romanik used his influence to get him fired in retaliation for the chief's recommendation that Romanik's son, probationary patrolman Steve Romanik, be dismissed.

The elder Romanik says Alvarez went after his son in retaliation for his own on-air criticism of the chief.

CASEYVILLE, Ill. (AP) - The village board in Caseyville has voted to reinstate the village's police chief who was fired last week.
Caseyville Police Chief Jose Alvarez was fired just five months after taking over for a predecessor who killed himself. But board members voted Thursday to reinstate Alvarez. Board member Rick Casey Jr. tells the Belleville News-Democrat that he voted to reinstate Alvarez because "the process in which he was fired was not right."
At the time Alvarez said he wasn't aware that he'd been fired. When he fired Alvarez, Caseyville Mayor Len Black said he wanted to take a different direction with the city's police department.
Black hired the 61-year-old Alvarez last September after the suicide three months earlier of former police chief J.D. Roth.

CASEYVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a former metro-east police officer has been charged with driving under the influence and impersonating a police officer.

Caseyville Police Chief Jose Alvarez says 56 year old Harold J. Johnson of Brooklyn is being held in the St. Clair County Jail with bond set at $10,000.

Authorities say Johnson was pulled over for a traffic violation early Saturday. Alvarez says Johnson was driving under the influence and claimed to be a Brooklyn police officer during the stop. He had a loaded gun with him, which police seized. Police later learned Johnson had been fired from the Brooklyn police force earlier this year, but he hadn't turned in his gun and badge.

It was not immediately clear if Johnson has an attorney.

The Belleville News Democrat reports former Caseyville, IL  Police Chief JD Roth, who took his own life, was being investigated by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Department investigation into the police department that he headed for 11 years.

The paper reports police records show Roth sent a despondent text message to his girlfriend before he went into his backyard and shot himself in the head. A large sum of money" and multiple guns were discovered inside a safe at Roth's home.

His pre-paid funeral arrangements and will were on a plastic-covered table nearby.

Roth operated a home-based business called Special Order Firearms.

The Caseyville police chief facing misconduct charges, is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound.

J.D. Roth was found on the back patio of his Fairview Heights home Thursday. Roth was under investigation for allegedly letting his girlfriend off for a felony drunk driving charge. Investigators also alleged that he used a pickup that was seized during a drug bust for personal reasons.

The Caseyville Mayor George Chance fired Roth in March. Roth had been chief for 10 years.

The former mayor of Caseyville, Illinois wants the ballots from the April election recounted.  That's because George Chance lost his reelection bid by only four votes -- after 27 years in office.

Chance was entitled to a discovery examination of 25% of the ballots.  That took place Monday.  Chance says he's already found one vote that was miscounted, so he plans to ask a judge to have all of the ballots tallied again.

The new mayor, Leonard Black has already taken office, but says he can't blame Chance for wanting a full recount.

Mayor Black told Fox 2 News that he'd probably do the same thing if he'd lost by such a narrow margin.  "I probably would," he said. "I don't hold that against Mr. Chance.  I would do the same thing. I mean it's close enough that it's reasonable."

The final vote count was 576-to-572.
