ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - A witness says the gunman in a school shooting in the southeastern New Mexico city of Roswell was a student.
The shooter wounded two students at Berrendo Middle School on Tuesday morning before being taken into custody.
Officials at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, say a 14-year-old boy was flown there in critical condition, and a 13-year-old girl was en route in serious condition. Hospital spokesman Eric Finley says information from nurses treating the boy indicates he was the shooter's target.
A student who witnessed the shooting says the shooter was a boy who she thought was being bullied. Eighth grader Odiee Carranza says it happened in the school gym. She says the boy shot the 14-year-old twice in the face, and shot the girl in the arm.
Carranza says the boy then fired a shot into the sky before dropping the gun. A teacher then grabbed him.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says his administration "let down the people we are entrusted to serve" in an apparent political payback scandal but says it doesn't define his team or the state.
Christie made the comments Tuesday in his annual State of the State speech less than one week after revelations that at least one of his top aides helped plan politically motivated lane closures last year that led to massive gridlock. The widening scandal threatens to undermine his second term and a possible presidential run.
Christie addressed the issue only briefly before taking credit for improving the state's economy. According to a prepared version of the speech provided by his office, he spent only 148 words talking about the lane closings, which has been the biggest scandal of his governorship
DENVER (AP) - Denver police have identified the man who was shot while trying to use a woman as a human shield during a hostage standoff as 34-year-old Blas Leroux, but they are not saying anything about a possible motive.
Dramatic video shot by KDVR-TV shows Leroux leaving a 7-Eleven store with a hostage in front of him on Monday when a police bullet to the shoulder knocks him down and the woman runs away. Leroux was taken to a hospital where police said he is in critical condition.
Anthony Flores told KMGH-TV that he saw the shooting from across the street. He said the suspect didn't move after being shot.
Police say the man took three hostages, but one managed to escape.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri state senator is formally calling on the state education commissioner to resign.
Democratic Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, of University City, filed a formal resolution Tuesday asking Chris Nicastro to immediately leave office.
Chappelle-Nadal says Nicastro has been "less than truthful" in dealing with the Legislature. She also criticized the commissioner for entering into a contract with a consulting firm to improve the failing Kansas City schools, even though the firm's bid was higher than other submissions.
The resolution also cites Nicastro's assistance with an initiative petition seeking to change the state's teacher tenure laws as a reason that she should leave office.
The resolution has not been referred to a Senate committee. Nicastro's job status can be affected only by the State Board of Education.
