Violent weekend in Chicago leaves at least 7 dead
Monday, 17 June 2013 12:31 Published in National NewsCHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Police are investigating several shootings after a violent weekend that left at least seven people dead and more than three dozen wounded.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday that it was the city's most violent weekend of the year.
Authorities say the weekend's first homicide happened late Friday. The tally, which included at least 41 injuries, spanned Friday night through Sunday night.
Also, police say an officer shot and killed a teenager Sunday night on the South Side after the teen pointed a gun at them. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the teen as 15-year-old Michael Westley.
Police say despite the spate of shootings over the weekend there have been fewer shootings and homicides this year compared to the same period last year.
Jet with President GW Bush makes emergency landing

The Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday that the jet was flying from Philadelphia to Dallas, where Bush lives. The FAA said the plane was diverted to Louisville, Ky., after the smell of smoke was reported in the cockpit. No one was hurt.
Bush spokesman Freddy Ford told The Associated Press on Sunday that after a brief stop, the plane continued to Dallas. Ford was on board and said he never saw or smelled smoke.
FAA spokeswoman Holly Baker said the Gulfstream 4 eventually landed at Dallas Love Field.
Bush is honorary chairman of The First Tee, which supports youth education programs through golf, and was returning from an event in Philadelphia.

The Superman tale starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams earned an additional $12 million from Thursday screenings, bringing its total to $125 million. Original expectations for the film ranged from $75 million to $130 million.
Sony's "This Is the End" opened in second place with $20.5 million in its opening weekend. The apocalyptic comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco opened Wednesday, banking a total of $32.8 million.
In its third weekend, "Now You See Me" earned $10 million in third place, bringing its total to $80 million.
