JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Candidates for Congress and state offices will line up at the secretary of state's office in the state capital this week to file for the 2014 election.
Filing opens on Tuesday and runs until March 25. Candidates showing up on Tuesday will participate in a random drawing to determine whose name shows up first on the August primary ballot.
All 163 state House seats are up for re-election, as well as 17 Senate seats. The Republicans currently hold 108 seats in the House and have 24 of the Senate's 34 spots.
The state auditor's race is the only statewide contest on the ballot. Republican Auditor Tom Schweich is seeking re-election and has no announced Democratic opposition.
All eight of Missouri's U.S. House members also face re-election.

Alleged child killer arraigned in Springfield

Friday, 21 February 2014 10:52 Published in Local News
Accused child killer Craig Wood made his first court appearance in a video  arraignment today (Friday) in a Springfield, MO court. T
The Springfield News Leader reports that Wood was formally charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and child kidnapping in the death of 10-year-old Hailey Owens.
Hailey was abducted and killed Tuesday evening in Springfield. Eight of Hailey’s family members attended the arraignment.
Wood has requested a public defender to handle his case, but Greene County prosecutor Todd Myers challenged that request after he said police found evidence Wood has a $1 million trust in his name.
Myers said Wood “clearly had the means” to pay for his own defense and that it would be an “inappropriate use of public funds” for Wood to be granted a public defender.
The question of whether Wood is eligible for a public defender will be addressed in a court hearing at 9 a.m. on March 19.
FENTON, Mo. (AP) - Authorities in Jefferson County are searching for two burglary suspects after a homeowner fired three shots at them - but missed - during an invasion of her home.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says the woman awoke about 2:50 a.m. Friday and heard someone opening the front door of her home in Fenton. She looked down from the top of the stairs and saw two men standing inside the door. She fired three shots.

The burglars ran out, apparently without injuries.
