NY governor orders highways shut because of snow

Thursday, 02 January 2014 15:36 Published in National News
NEW YORK (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says some major highways around New York City will be shut down as a coastal storm brings snow and blizzard conditions to the region.

Cuomo says Interstate 84 in the Hudson Valley will be closed to commercial traffic starting at 5 p.m. Thursday and to all traffic at midnight. He says the Long Island Expressway will be closed at midnight on most of the island. The New York Thruway also will be closed from Albany south at midnight.

Cuomo says plans are for the highways to reopen at 5 a.m. Friday, but a decision will be made by 4 a.m.

The governor also declared a state of emergency Thursday and urged people to "seriously consider" staying home.

He says mass transit isn't expected to be hampered.

Nearly two weeks after a jewelry store burglary, police are still looking for the suspects.

On the evening of December 20 and employee at Mississippi Mud Gallery and Gifts in Imperial, MO noticed a rear window had been opened. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says the thief made off with tens of thousands of dollars in jewelry.

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department at 636-262-3965.

Missouri drivers have safest year since 1940's

Thursday, 02 January 2014 15:21 Published in Local News
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The year 2013 was the safest on Missouri roads in more than six decades.

Preliminary figures released Thursday by the Missouri State Highway Patrol show that 741 people died in traffic crashes last year.

Patrol Capt. Tim Hull says that's the lowest number since 683 people died on Missouri roads in 1947.

Missouri officials have placed an emphasis on reducing traffic fatalities in recent years.

The Department of Transportation has installed cables in the medians of some four-lane highways to prevent cross-over crashes and rumble strips on the sides to warn drivers when they are close to running off the road.

Since 2005, Missouri traffic fatalities have declined 41 percent.

Of those killed in crashes last year, 63 percent were not wearing seatbelts as they were required to do.
