Area residents should be on the lookout as a Chesterfield grandmother fell victim to a scam.
Police say the woman was contacted by a group of scammers who told her that her grandson was being held in a foreign prison. The woman says that over a series of phone calls, she was convinced to wire a quarter-of-a-million dollars to a bank in Peru.
Chesterfield police say they have not received other reports of similar scams, but residents should still be aware.
EAST PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Two central Illinois men are facing charges after authorities say they stole more than $1 million in equipment from Caterpillar Inc.
John R. Peters, 50, of East Peoria, and 35-year-old Eliot J. Wells, of Peoria, are each being held on $500,000 bond in the Tazewell County Jail. Both have ties to the Peoria-based heavy equipment maker. Peters used to work for Caterpillar, while Wells is a current employee.
Court document show the stolen machinery was being sold on eBay.
It wasn't clear if the two men had retained attorneys. Peters' phone rang unanswered Tuesday. Meanwhile, Wells' number wasn't listed.
Caterpillar officials said in a statement that they're working with authorities as part of the investigation into the thefts.
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. officials say a draft Defense Department audit criticizes one of the Navy's security review programs for lower level contractors. But that process was not the one used to evaluate the former reservist who gunned down 12 people Monday at the Washington Navy Yard.
Aaron Alexis, the 34-year-old information technology contractor involved in the shooting rampage, had a secret security clearance for his job. He went through a different, more extensive review.
The Defense Department Inspector General found that a separate system used to review some contractors did not properly vet the workers. That program is generally for contractors who don't have security clearances.
Officials described the audit on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss a draft report. He was granted the clearance in March 2008.
