Laclede Gas finalizes large acquisition

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Laclede Gas Co. says it has finalized a $975 million deal to buy Missouri Gas Energy.

Laclede announced Tuesday that the purchase has been completed. The deal combines Missouri's two largest natural gas companies under one entity that will serve more than 1.1 million customers across the state.

St. Louis-based Laclede had served about 630,000 customers in St. Louis and 10 eastern Missouri counties. Missouri Gas Energy had served about 500,000 customers in about 30 western and central Missouri counties, including the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Joplin areas.

Laclede had announced the deal last December. State utility regulators approved it in July.

Fire crews have evacuated about a dozen several homes near a major gas leak in Wildwood.

The leak happened in the 11-000 block of Audubon Village Drive, which is just south of Manchester. The leak happened Wednesday morning after a contractor hit a 4 inch natural gas line.  Laclede Gas crews were able to shut off the gas lines so there is no danger to homeowners.

Metro West Firefighters will return and inspect over a dozen homes to make sure they are safe. They will remain without gas for Wednesday afternoon.

Evacuations over after car hits gas line

Residents in one north city neighborhood are back in their homes after a car crash forced their evacuations. It happened at Theodore and Oriole in the Walnut Park neighborhood about 7:30 Wednesday evening.

St. Louis police say a car struck a Laclede Gas service pipe. There was initial concern about a possible gas leak. Half a dozen nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Laclede Gas crews determined that there was no gas leak, so the residents were allowed back home.

There's no word what led to the crash.
