Former St. Louis Cardinal's catcher Hal Smith has died.  Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith, Arkansas says he died Saturday at age 82.  Smith first signed with the Cardinals in 1949. He played for the Redbirds from 1956-61 and was named to three National League All-Star teams.  He later played briefly for Pittsburgh in 1965 before becoming a scout and coach for several teams.  He's survived by his wife and three adult children.

Schnucks to close N. Grand store in May

Monday, 14 April 2014 17:25 Published in Local News
North St. Louis is losing a major grocer.  Officials with Schnucks Markets announced Monday plans to close the Schnucks store at North Grand and Kossuth on May 10th.
Company officials say none of the 65 store employees will lose their jobs.  All will be transferred to other nearby stores.
Schnucks' President and CEO Todd Schnuck says the store has been operating at a loss since it was purchased as part of the 1995 National Supermarkets acquisition.  Schnuck says sales at the store won't offset the cost of needed repairs at the 45 year old structure.
Alderman Freeman Bosley Senior, who represents the area around the store, is critical of the move.  He tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that closing the store is "really hurtful to that community."  He says Schnucks should build a new store on the site.

Body of woman found in West Co. pond

Monday, 14 April 2014 16:30 Published in Local News

An autopsy will be performed to try to determine how a West St. Louis County woman died after her body was found floating in a pond near the Reflection Cove Apartments near Ballwin.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that a passerby crossing a walking bridge about 7:30 Monday morning saw the body in the pond.  The woman was floating in three to five feet of water.

The woman was in her late 60s and police say she had been seen by her husband earlier in the morning. Her name hasn't been released.
