Campaigns push to turn out voters in Colorado recall

Tuesday, 10 September 2013 17:00 Published in National News

DENVER (AP) - Campaigns are working to get as many voters as possible to the polls in Colorado's first legislative recall elections.

Two Democratic lawmakers who voted for new firearm restrictions are being challenged Tuesday.

Unlike most recent elections, there are no automatic mail ballots, so voters need to cast their ballots in person.

The gap between Republican and Democratic turnout in Sen. John Morse's district in El Paso County narrowed after a GOP advantage in early voting. In Sen. Angela Giron's Pueblo County district, Democrats have outpaced Republicans. Both districts also have a significant number of unaffiliated voters.

LAKE MARY, Fla. (AP) - Police have released a dash cam video of George Zimmerman being handcuffed after his estranged wife called 911 and said he was threatening her with a gun.

The video released Tuesday shows officers ordering Zimmerman out of his truck. They tell him to put his hands up and drop to his knees. Two officers approach him. One of them has a gun drawn while the other handcuffs Zimmerman.

Police are investigating whether George Zimmerman or Shellie Zimmerman should be charged after the dispute Monday. Shellie Zimmerman told a 911 dispatcher George Zimmerman threatened her with a gun, but later told police she didn't see a gun.

Authorities in Lake Mary say video from her broken iPad may be crucial evidence in determining whether any charges are filed.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - A Republican state representative from Sikeston has apologized for comparing Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon's support of his decision to veto a tax cut to Adolf Hitler's Nazi propaganda.

Rep. Holly Rehder made the comparison in an email to constituents last week. She issued a statement Monday apologizing to anyone who was "truly offended."

The 44-year-owner of a cable TV contracting company was elected to her first term in November. Rehder represent parts of Scott and Mississippi counties in southeast Missouri.

The Southeast Missourian reports that Rehder plans to vote for an override of Nixon's veto when the Legislature convenes in Jefferson City starting Wednesday.
