St. Louis named top travel destination

St. Louis, MO (KTRS) - St. Louis' reputation as a tourist destination is growing.

Travel website TripAdvisor named St. Louis one of the 25 top destinations in the US. The Gateway City took the 23rd spot. Branson, Missouri also made the cut, in the 19th spot. New York City snagged the top position for the fourth consecutive year.

This is just the latest recognition for St. Louis. The Huffington Post named St. Louis a hidden gem last month. And TripAdvisor named Busch Stadium one of the best ballparks in the nation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The threat which has prompted the U.S. to shutter some diplomatic posts and issue a travel alert is reportedly based on intercepted communications.

The New York Times is reporting that the communications were between senior al-Qaida operatives.

The top U.S. military commander says there is what he calls "a significant threat stream." Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey told ABC News that the threat was "more specific" than previous ones and that potential targets are Western, not just U.S. interests."

The State Department is urging American travelers to take extra precautions overseas. Potential dangers listed include public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists.

The threat follows this week's White House meeting between President Barack Obama and Yemen's current president, Abdo Rabby Mansour Hadi.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Governor Jay Nixon is leading a Missouri delegation to the Paris Air Show.

The delegation left Friday, and will head from Paris to the United Kingdom, then Belgium and return to Missouri on June 22nd.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 14 Missouri companies and institutions are in the Missouri delegation to show, which is a massive aerospace trade exhibition.

Most of the companies joining Nixon on the trip are in the aviation business, including Boeing Co. and Clayton-based Sabreliner. They're looking for new customers overseas.

State officials say no taxpayer funds are being used on the trip. Delegation members are paying their own way. Travel costs for Nixon and his wife are covered by the Hawthorne Foundation, an economic development nonprofit group funded by private donations.
