HIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — Police say a gunman who barricaded himself with hostages inside a South Florida apartment complex has killed six people before being shot to death by a SWAT team.
Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez tells The Associated Press the hours-long standoff began around 6:30 p.m. EDT in a five-story building in Hialeah, just a few miles north of Miami.
He says the bodies of three women and two men were found throughout the apartment complex after police arrived. Another man was killed across the street when the gunman allegedly spotted him and took aim.
Rodriguez says the two hostages the man took were unharmed. Before the shootout, police had been able to communicate with the gunman.
Rodriguez says police were still investigating the motive and identifying the gunman and victims.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Six federal marshals are being recognized for bravery related to a 2011 St. Louis gunfight that killed one of their own from Illinois and a drug suspect they were looking to arrest.
Federal lawmakers from Missouri and Illinois were expected to attend Monday's ceremony in St. Louis honoring the law enforcers with the Congressional Badge of Bravery.
Fugitive Carlos Boles was shot and killed in March 2011 in his St. Louis home where law enforcers were trying to arrest him on drug and assault charges. Also killed was John Perry, a 48-year-old Illinois native who'd been with the U.S. Marshals Service for nearly 10 years.
Two other law enforcers were wounded.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois says Monday's honorees rescued the wounded colleagues without regard for their own safety.
The official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing says the body was found at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday
Authorities said earlier they believed the man in the cabin was Christopher Dorner. He has been on the run since they say he launched a campaign to exact revenge against the Los Angeles Police Department for his firing.
Officials will be looking for identifying marks such as tattoos before confirming the identity.
Police say Dorner killed four people, including a deputy on Tuesday.
