Police Shooter Sentenced To Life

Clayton, MO --  The man who was convicted of shooting a former police officer has been sentenced to two life terms plus 20 years.

Fox2 News reports that Brian Cannon Jr. learned his fate Friday morning at the county courthouse in Clayton.

The 22 year old was convicted of shooting and paralyzing  Florissant police officer Mike Vernon while fleeing from a crime. He was convicted in March of first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of burglary, car theft and other felonies.

Officer Vernon was searching an alley for a burglar in May of 2012, when Cannon popped out of a dumpster and began shooting. Vernon was struck three times and is paralyzed from the waist down.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A convicted killer faces a May sentencing date after being found guilty of shooting a police officer in the face while the officer was trying to arrest him.

St. Clair County jurors deliberated an hour before convicting 38-year-old Cortez Gillum of two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Gillum also was found guilty of aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawfully possessing a weapon as a felon.

Prosecutors say that Gillum was wanted on a federal warrant in March 2012 because he'd violated parole after being released to a halfway house.

When police officer Michael Baxton Jr. spotted Gillum outside a public housing complex and tried to arrest him, the two struggled. Gillum shot Baxton, who survived. Gillum's previous convictions include one for second-degree murder.

The St. Louis County coroner is trying to determine if police shot an Affton man to death, or if he shot himself.

St. Louis County Police were called to a home in the 9800 block of Arv-Ellen about 7:30 Saturday night because of a man reportedly waving a gun around in his front yard and yelling for someone to call police.

Officers arrived to find 36 year old Shawn Spiros sitting on the front porch.

Police say they tried to talk with Spiros, but he pulled a gun from his waistband, raised it toward officers and then at his own head.  Police spokesman Randy Vaughn says it appears that Spiros and an officer fired at the same time. It's yet not clear which shot killed Spiros.  The coroner is expected to release a report on Monday.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - State police in Mississippi say a murder suspect shot a Jackson police detective and then shot himself at police headquarters.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said Friday that Jeremy Powell shot Detective Eric Smith before killing himself, in the first official description of how the men died.

The state agency took over the investigation from the Jackson Police Department.

The men died in a third-floor room Thursday where Smith was interrogating Powell. Powell had been arrested in connection with the stabbing death of a 20 year old Jackson man.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart says she will perform autopsies on Friday.
