MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut say a man they suspect killed three women took his own life minutes after officers confronted him.

Manchester police say they arrived on the scene about 9:40 p.m. Saturday, minutes after getting a 911 call. They say the armed suspect was leaving an apartment building carrying a young child. Police say shortly after police confronted the man, he put down the 13-month-old child and shot himself. The child was unharmed.

Police say an officer also fired at the man, but apparently missed.

Authorities say the officers checked the apartment building and found three deceased women in one unit. They apparently had been shot.

Police released no other details Sunday morning but say the investigation is continuing.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis police say a reported "knockout game" attack in the city has proven to be false.

The Post-Dispatch reports that investigators plan to seek criminal charges of falsifying a police report against the woman who made the report and her boyfriend.

The woman's claim that she was attacked randomly outside a St. Louis bar last month drew national attention. Police now believe she was injured by the boyfriend and they made up the story to cover for her injuries.

The so-called "knockout game" involves random attacks on innocent people. Some cases have been reported in St. Louis, including a fatal attack of a Vietnamese immigrant in 2011.

Mascoutah man charged for stabbing man to death

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A 23-year-old southwestern Illinois man is jailed on $2 million bond after being accused of fatally stabbing a man who police say spent the past several years trying to help the troubled defendant.

Prosecutors in St. Clair County on Wednesday charged Joshua Rogers with first-degree murder in the death of Richard Feldt of Mascoutah.

Police asked by Feldt's relatives to check on his well-being found Feldt's body Monday night on his living room floor, with Rogers relaxing on a nearby couch.

Mascoutah Police Chief Bruce Fleshren says Feldt had not been seen since Thanksgiving Day and when found had been dead at least a day.

Online court records don't show whether Rogers has an attorney. He does not have a listed home telephone number.

Two captured after attempted jewelry theft

Police say an employee of an Ellisville jewelry store fired a gun at two men who robbed the store this morning.

The incident started just after 10 AM when one of the suspects asked an employee to show him an expensive watch. The suspect then grabbed the watch and ran in the parking lot. Two employees chased the suspect out of the store. Officers say there was a physical altercation between the suspects and employees in the parking lot. But, when the suspect got into a waiting car, one of the employees pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the suspects.

Police captured the suspects after a short car chase ended in a crash near the Chesterfield mall. Officers recovered the watch the men had stolen--a Rolex worth nearly $35,000.

The suspects have not been identified.

Missouri State Representative Steve Webb is resigning his position.

Webb came under fire last month for allegedly using the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus' name to steal money. Prosecutors say that Webb solicited a $3,000 donation to sponsor a black caucus reception in Washington. Instead, court documents say Webb transferred the money to a personal account.

In a statement released Monday, Webb said he believes allegations against him will "work themselves out", but that resigning is the right thing to do for his family and colleagues.

Webb, a Democrat, faces one felony stealing charge and seven misdemeanor charges for misuse of campaign money.
