LANCASTER, Ohio (AP) -- Police say an instructor at a central Ohio gun safety class has accidentally shot a student.

The Columbus Dispatch reports 73 year old Terry J. Dunlap Sr. was demonstrating a handgun at a training facility on Saturday when he fired a bullet that ricocheted off a desk and into the right arm of 26 year old Michael Piemonte.

The student says the .38 caliber bullet hit him between his elbow and armpit. He says many of the students in the class were nurses who helped stabilize him before he was transported to a Columbus hospital.

Piemonte tells the newspaper it appears Dunlap didn't know the gun was loaded. Dunlap hasn't responded to requests for comment.

Police believe a man shot to death in the St. Clair County Courthouse Monday afternoon took his own life.

St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson says it happened on the fourth floor of the parking garage about 4:30 p.m.

Police haven't released the man's name pending notification of family, but say he was 25-30 years old and had addresses in both Belleville and Caseyville, Illinois.

Watson says the man had not gone to the courthouse but to the probation office on the other side of the garage.

Sheriff's deputies and Belleville police had initially closed down the garage thinking there might be a gunman still lurking.  It reopened about an hour later.

CASCADE, Idaho (AP) — Law enforcement officials in Idaho say they are making sure Hannah Anderson is getting the physical and emotional care she needs after a harrowing weeklong search ended in the wilderness yesterday with her rescue and the death of the man who apparently kidnapped her.

FBI agents first spotted the California teen and James DiMaggio from the air, then moved in on their campsite.

DiMaggio is suspected of killing Anderson's mother and brother, who were found in his burning house outside San Diego last week.

The 16-year-old appeared to be uninjured and is expected to be reunited with her father today. She has been recuperating in an Idaho hospital.

The FBI is sending investigators to try to fill in the details about the ordeal. DiMaggio was a friend of the Anderson family, and Hannah's father says the children thought of him as an uncle.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (AP) — The death of a 7-year-old boy in Virginia by a stray bullet is drawing attention to the dangers of celebratory shooting.

The practice involves firing a weapon into the sky, often on New Year's Eve and July Fourth.

This summer, a bullet pierced Brendon Mackey's head as he went to a fireworks show in central Virginia. Brendon died the next day.

Police determined that the bullet was probably fired within a 5,200-foot radius. Investigators have knocked on hundreds of doors hoping to find the person who fired the fatal shot. No one has come forward.

A state senator is proposing "Brendon's Law" to curb celebratory shooting and to provide stiffer penalties for those who maim or injure others with stray bullets.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - A witness to the 2009 Fort Hood shootings says she had to quickly decide who she could save, so she used a black marker to write a "D" on the foreheads of the victims she couldn't.

Sgt. 1st Class Maria Guerra recalled those moments while testifying Thursday at the trial of Maj. Nidal Hasan. He's accused of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others that day at the Texas military base.

Hasan is acting as his own attorney. He raised a rare objection when Guerras said she heard the gunman silence a woman who was yelling, "My baby!" Hasan asked the judge to remind Guerra she was under oath.

Guerra said she didn't want to change her testimony.

Hasan challenged no other witnesses and said little during the trial.
