Missouri has been awarded a $7.5 million federal grant to continue a program that helps the state's lowest-achieving schools.

The U.S. Department of Education announced the award from the federal School Improvement Grants program on Monday. In all, the agency awarded more than $43 million in such grants to seven states.

Missouri's education department will distribute the federal funds to districts showing the greatest need and strongest commitment to improving achievement at their lowest-performing schools.

This is the third year Missouri has received a grant from the federal program

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department will soon have an additional $22,000 to find and stop drunken drivers.

The county council agreed to accept $22,000 from the state. The Post-Dispatch reports the county only took the money on the condition that the funds be used for DUI checkpoints and not safety checkpoints. County residents argued earlier this year that safety checkpoints, which include checks for seat belt usage, violated their civil rights. The backlash was so great that the county rejected a grant in October that would have funded DUI and safety checkpoints.

The grant money will be split between covering the cost of officer overtime to man the checkpoints and equipment--such as road flares and safety vests.

A $1 million grant was awarded to metro area law enforcement to assist in efforts to aid in the prosecution of sex trafficking suspects.

The grant is courtesy of the US Department of Justice. Funds will be split between helping victims of trafficking and the prosecution of trafficking crimes. St. Louis County Police and St. Charles County Police are sharing the money with three social service groups.

Missouri is one of only six groups being awarded the grant nationwide.
