BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Officials say up to five people have died after a car spun out and burst into flames early Saturday morning in Burbank, Calif., trapping people inside.

There was one survivor found about 50 yards from the burning Nissan when police arrived on the scene around 4 a.m. Sergeant Darin Ryburn says the 18-year-old woman was taken to Los Angeles County Medical Center. Fire Battalion Chief Ron Barone said paramedics reported smelling alcohol on her breath. It's unclear how she ended up outside the vehicle.

Ryburn says speed appears to be a factor in the crash.

The flames from the fire spread to nearby trees and brush and Barone says they were doused within moments of firefighter's arriving.

32 dead in latest wave of Iraq attacks

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — Officials say nearly a dozen apparently coordinated car bombs and a shooting across Iraq have killed at least 32 and wounded scores.

Officials say the car bombs targeting Shiite-majority areas were the cause of most of the casualties. The shooting happened near the northern city of Mosul when gunmen attacked police guarding a remote stretch of an oil pipeline.

Violence has spiked sharply in Iraq in recent months, with the death toll rising to levels not seen since 2008. Nearly 2,000 have been killed since the start of April.

The extended wave of attacks is raising fears of a return to widespread sectarian killing a decade after the U.S.-led invasion.

A total of six deaths on Missouri roads and waterways this holiday weekend.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says five people died in the more than 270 accidents from Friday night through Monday. There were also 129 arrests for drunken driving.

On the waterways, one man died at Upper Big Lake, just east of Sikeston. Troopers say 64-year-old Oscar Shannon fell overboard and drowned while tying his boat to a tree--he was not wearing a life jacket.

The six deaths represent a decrease from the nine fatalities investigated on roadways over the holiday weekend in 2012.

An 81-year-old Ballwin woman is recovering from a knife wound after police say she shot and killed her son.

Ballwin police say it's not the first time they received a domestic disturbance call to the home of Joanna Walker in the 700 block of Clayworth.

Just after one this morning, they found her son, 41-year-old Brian Walker, shot twice in the chest. He was taken to an area hospital where he died about an hour later.

A knife and gun were recovered at the home. Police say the elderly woman suffered a deep knife wound to her hand and is being treated at an area hospital. She told police her son came after her with a knife and she acted in self defense. No word on if any charges have been filed.
