AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine's medical examiner says a 15-year-old girl police believe was lured to her death by a man using a phony Facebook profile died from asphyxiation.

   The official cause of Nichole Cable's death was given Thursday as "asphyxia due to compression of the neck." Authorities haven't elaborated.

   Chief medical examiner Dr. Margaret Greenwald released the autopsy results after consulting with the state police crime lab, which has been reviewing evidence.

   Twenty-year-old Orono resident Kyle Dube (DOO'-bee) is being held on murder and kidnapping charges in Nichole's death.

   Police say he used a fake Facebook profile to lure her from her Glenburn home before killing her May 12. Her remains were found in woods in nearby Old Town days later.

   Dube's lawyer is out of town and unavailable for comment.

A Granite City man faces charges for allegedly stabbing his estranged wife to death.

The Police report says that Marissa Stainback was walking with a male friend yesterday afternoon when Tyrone Stainback approached her and stabbed her. Marissa was rushed to the hospital, but the Madison County Coroner confirmed she died from several stab wounds.

Tyrone is being held on no bond and faces 1st degree murder charges.

A contractor working on the Blanchette Bridge died after an accident Monday morning.

Just before 11 AM, the worker was hit by a large barrel. He died from his injuries. The man has not been identified, but was an employee of Walsh Construction--they were hired to perform the bridge repairs.

Crews were set to close the exit ramp from westbound 70 to southbound Fifth Street for work Monday night, but that project has been postponed.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Two people were found dead in a burned home near Santa Monica College, where someone sprayed a street corner with gunfire just before noon, wounding at least four people.

The Los Angeles-area campus is about 3 miles from where President Barack Obama was attending a fundraising luncheon, just before noon.

Police said a shooter was in custody and the campus was being searched after unconfirmed reports that there was a second shooter.

A man dressed in black, with the words "Life is a Gamble" on the back of his sweatshirt, was seen being taken into custody by law enforcement officers.

Four shooting victims were admitted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. A hospital spokesman says two were in critical condition, one was in serious condition, and one was in good condition.

Authorities say one person is dead after an accident on the Page Extension. The accident happened at Bennington Place. The only vehicle visible on traffic cameras was a pickup truck. No word on the cause of the accident and the victim's name has not been released.

One person is dead after a SUV ran a red light in Berkeley  last night around 9:30.

Missouri Highway Patrol officials say 29 year old Leroy Jennings of St. Louis was southbound on Evergreeen, ran a red light at the intersection and collided with an eastbound car on Airport Road.

A passenger in Jennings sport utility vehicle, 34 year old Lawrence Woods of St. Louis, was seriously hurt and taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital.

The other driver, a 23 year old Brentwood woman suffered minor injuries in the collision.

CHICAGO (AP) - Police say a Chicago man charged in the death of a 6-month old girl was gang member who was retaliating for the theft of a video game console.

   Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, says Koman Willis is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. A bond hearing is set for Tuesday.

   Jonylah Watkins was killed March 11 while sitting in her father's lap in a minivan. Police say the dad, Jonathan Watkins, was the intended target. Watkins was seriously wounded.

   The shooting took place in the middle of the day in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. It was one of several earlier this year that brought attention to the gang violence in Chicago.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Prominent hotel developer and Missouri philanthropist John Q. Hammons has died. He was 94.

His company says Hammons passed away Sunday at the Springfield nursing home where he'd lived after stepping away from the company he led well into his 80s.

After his first business went bust in the 1940s, Hammons built subdivisions in southwest Missouri before purchasing 10 Holiday Inn franchises with a partner in 1958.

He went on to build 200 hotels nationwide, avoiding big cities in favor of college towns and state capitals. His expansive real estate portfolio included golf courses and convention centers.

Hammons also donated millions to hospitals, colleges and public television. His name graces so many buildings and streets in Springfield that comedian Bob Hope once joked the city should be named "Hammonsville."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pioneering Washington journalist Haynes Johnson, who helped redefine political reporting, has died at age 81.

The University of Maryland, where Johnson was a journalism professor, reports that he suffered a heart attack Friday while at a Bethesda, Md., hospital. He had attended the journalism college's graduation days earlier.

Johnson was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 1966 for coverage of the civil rights struggle in Selma, Ala. Johnson spent about 12 years at The Evening Star in Washington before legendary Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee hired him away in 1969.

Besides reporting, Johnson was a columnist at the newspaper from 1977 to 1994.

Johnson was the author, co-author or editor of 18 books. He also appeared regularly on the PBS programs "Washington Week in Review" and "The NewsHour."

Still very little information after a man was shot and killed in north St. Louis this morning.

Police say they found 20-year-old Jermaine Johnson on the street near the city's border with Pine Lawn around 2 AM. Witnesses told officers they heard the gunshots, but did not know much more about the shooting.
