St. Louis, MO (KTRS) - A woman is in custody for a second time connected to a fatal hit and run accident in Chesterfield last month.

 

Yelena Pelts was first arrested of February 18, but released as police continued to investigate. Wednesday she was arrested again and is facing felony charges. Police say Pelts was driving on Olive near Highway 141 on February 11, when she hit and killed Roy Joseph.

 

Pelts is now held on a $10,000 bond.

Missing SIU-Carbondale student found, dead

Authorities say they have found the body of missing SIU-Carbondale student, Pravin Varughese.

 

His family was offering a $15,000 reward to find the student. Authorities found his body in a heavily wooded area off of East Main Street.VAHR-eh-geez was last seen on Wednesday night at a part. Police believe he may have gotten into a fight or argument and he got a ride home from the party. Witnesses told police that he could not tell the driver where he lived, so he got out of the car.

 

He was found with all of his clothes, but he was not wearing a jacket. Authorities think he might have died of exposure and are not treating the death as a homicide.

A suspect is in custody connected to a fatal hit and run crash last week.

 

Police arrested Yelena Pelts. She was initially a person of interest in the crash when they linked her vehicle to the scene. Now police believe she was involved in the accident that killed 41-year-old Roy Joseph.

 

Charges are expected against Pelts on Wednesday.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A medical examiner says an 18-year-old Illinois man found dead in a University of Missouri dormitory room in October died from natural causes.
 
Boone County Chief Medical Examiner Carl Stacy says Gregory G. Holthaus, of Highland, Ill., died from sudden cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart.
 
The Columbia Daily Tribune reported Holthaus was found dead Oct. 13 in the Pershing group of residence halls in Columbia. He was visiting a friend who was a Missouri student.
 
Stacy's report was released to the Tribune late Friday. It says no medications or drugs, and only a small amount of alcohol, was found in Holthaus' system.
 
The report said Holthaus woke up, took a shower and ate Oct. 13, and a friend found him dead about three hours later.

Coroner examines 3 Madison County heroin deaths

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in southwestern Illinois' Madison County are investigating the deaths of three people who died from suspected heroin overdoses after all three bodies were found within a span of five hours.

Coroner Stephen Nonn says the body of 29-year-old Katie Heavey of Collinsville was found Thursday night by her father.

Nonn says 38-year-old Dearold Oseland was found dead early Friday in his Roxana apartment by his girlfriend. That was about 90 minutes before 40-year-old Paul Simpson's body was found in his Granite City home.

Nonn says autopsies in each case were inconclusive, and toxicology tests are pending.

The coroner says evidence of drug use was found at each scene.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Homicide and child abuse detectives are investigating the death of a young child.

 

Emergency crews were called to a north St. Louis home around 3:30 this morning on reports that a one-year-old girl was having health problems. When paramedics arrived the girl had no heart beat and was not breathing. They performed CPR and transported her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

 

Investigators are still at the home, but no further details have been released.

Two children dead after house fire

Two children are dead and two others hurt after house fire in North County Monday morning.

 

Fire crews were called to a home on Airport Road just east of I-270 in Berkeley areound 5:30 this morning. After the blaze was extinguished, firefighters searched the home and found the children dead in the house.

 

A third child and an adult were taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

 

Authorities have no identified the victims and the cause of the fire is unclear.

A tragic afternoon for a Franklin County family.

 

Police are investigating after an 8-year-old boy died on a school bus Monday afternoon. Investigators say Bradley Voss collapsed on the bus around 3:45 yesterday. The bus driver performed CPR until emergency crews arrived. Voss was taken to the hospital where he died. School officials say the boy showed no signs of illness through the day before he collapsed.

 

No foul play is suspected in the death and an autopsy is planned.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - An autopsy has revealed that a San Francisco Bay Area transit officer who was shot and killed by a fellow officer died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
 
   The results of the autopsy on Bay Area Rapid Transit police Sgt. Tom Smith were released Thursday by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
 
   Smith was wearing a bulletproof vest, but Sheriff's spokesman J.D. Nelson said the bullet struck an area that was not covered.
 
   The 42-year-old Smith was shot Tuesday while authorities searched a one-bedroom apartment in Dublin for items stolen during an armed holdup at a train station in Oakland.
   Investigators are trying to determine whether the officer's gun discharged accidentally or he mistook Smith for someone else.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A spring golf tournament is being planned to help the family of a Smithville man who died after an altercation at Arrowhead Stadium.
 
The Kyle Van Winkle golf classic will be held May 5 at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club in Prairie Village, Kan.
 
The 30-year-old Van Winkle died Dec. 1 after he was beaten in an Arrowhead parking lot during a Chiefs game. Court documents say Van Winkle was injured after he was found in a stranger's vehicle. Van Winkle apparently got into a vehicle that looked like the one he rode to the game in.
 
He left behind a widow and 7-week-old son.
 
His death was ruled a homicide but no one has been charged.
