JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Treasurer Clint Zweifel is recommending steps to protect and bolster military bases and defense spending within the state.
Zweifel's suggestions include creating a Missouri Military Foundation. The proposed private not-for-profit entity would coordinate efforts to support existing military installations and boost defense spending.

The foundation would have a board that includes business leaders, community organizations and retired military members.
Zweifel also proposes a compact that could allow military members to apply service time toward labor apprenticeships.

The treasurer also recommends efforts to protect military families' finances. He said Tuesday that Missouri community colleges have agreed to help develop a financial literacy program.

Gov. Jay Nixon assigned Zweifel to develop the recommendations. The treasurer met with federal officials, Pentagon officials, community groups and others.

Is it a retiree scam? Two Missouri officials are joining forces for an investigation to answer that question.  State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is raising concerns about deals in which retirees are signing over future pension checks in order to get quick cash. Zweifel says the deals typically involve an upfront payment to a retiree, under a contract in which the business then gets part of that person's future pension payments. Attorney General Chris Koster says he plans to join the investigation into such practices.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Missouri state treasurer hopes some online assistance will help his office track down the rightful owners or family heirs of more than 120 abandoned military medals.

Treasurer Clint Zweifel came to St. Louis Wednesday morning to promote a new state law that allows him to publicly share the names, last known addresses and other identifying information of possible medal owners.

The unclaimed property includes three Purple Heart medals, one of the highest military honors.

Details about the unclaimed medals can be found at the state treasurer's website.
