Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster updated the case against the operators of the Bridgeton Landfill. Koster says his office has reached a preliminary agreement with the owners of the landfill. Koster says that Republic Services has agreed to extinguish the smoldering event that's been burning underground for nearly 2 and a half years, and they agreed to eliminate the odor that's causing so many problems. Koster also gave a few specifics about the relocation process for households within a 1-mile radius of the landfill. Folks will be notified by phone calls, 3 rounds of door-to-door canvassing, and by the media. When asked about a potential worst-case scenario, Koster said no evacuation plan was needed, but the state will closely monitor the situation. Starting May 20th, Republic Services will start repairing some obsolete underground pipes, but Koster says that during the repair process, the odor may increase.
