Today's cold temperatures caused some tempers to flare in the Rockwood School District.

Parents were upset when officials sent a late cancellation notice to parents. Rockwood officials said on their Facebook page that they had to cancel classes because the cold temperatures put 20 buses out of service.  Another 85 buses did not have working brakes because of the cold.

Classes were canceled at 6:50 AM, but parents said that was too late. Many parents had already dropped their kids off at school.

Audit questions use of Katrina money in Mississippi

Thursday, 02 January 2014 15:38 Published in National News
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A new federal report says Mississippi officials accepted unsupported population growth estimates in developing a plan to use $653 million in federal Hurricane Katrina recovery money for water and wastewater facilities, including some that may not be needed.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Inspector General also questioned appraisals used to buy private land.

In June 2012, The Associated Press reported on concerns raised by residents and officials concerning the population estimates and the use of eminent domain to acquire private land for projects that may not be needed for years, if ever.

Among other things, the report recommends that Mississippi put procedures in place so that future projects are based on "objective and relevant population data."

NY governor orders highways shut because of snow

Thursday, 02 January 2014 15:36 Published in National News
NEW YORK (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says some major highways around New York City will be shut down as a coastal storm brings snow and blizzard conditions to the region.

Cuomo says Interstate 84 in the Hudson Valley will be closed to commercial traffic starting at 5 p.m. Thursday and to all traffic at midnight. He says the Long Island Expressway will be closed at midnight on most of the island. The New York Thruway also will be closed from Albany south at midnight.

Cuomo says plans are for the highways to reopen at 5 a.m. Friday, but a decision will be made by 4 a.m.

The governor also declared a state of emergency Thursday and urged people to "seriously consider" staying home.

He says mass transit isn't expected to be hampered.
