Boston preps for possible World Series celebration

Tuesday, 29 October 2013 17:22 Published in National News

BOSTON (AP) - Sports championships aren't rare in Boston anymore, and security officials are drawing on what went right - and wrong - during recent victory celebrations as the Red Sox look to claim another title.

The Red Sox return to Fenway Park on Wednesday needing one win in against the St. Louis Cardinals to win their third World Series since 2004.

Meanwhile, police are also dealing with a visit by President Obama, who'll be in town hours earlier Wednesday to discuss his health care reform.

City officials are confident both events will go smoothly. But they're tightening traffic restrictions, increasing police presence and asking the public to keep any Red Sox victory celebrations safe.

Boston Police Superintendent-in-chief Daniel Linsky said police will be engaging with the public and working to keep the crowd spread out and manageable.

NY Sandy babies celebrate 1st birthdays

Tuesday, 29 October 2013 17:19 Published in National News

NEW YORK (AP) - When Sandy left much of New York City in the dark, some residents were only hours old.

On Tuesday, the anniversary of the killer storm, babies filled a Manhattan hospital room during a celebration of their first birthdays.

Kenneth Hulett III weighed only 2 pounds when emergency medical workers rushed him out of a New York hospital intensive care unit. He was carried down stairs while hooked up to an oxygen tank.

His mother, Emily Blatt, says her faith carried her through. She was evacuated from her hospital room on an orange sled.

That day, more than 40 babies were safety moved from the hospital on Manhattan's East Side to other facilities.

On Tuesday, parents and hospital staff lighted candles on cupcakes and sang, "Happy birthday, dear babies."

Police have released a picture of the suspects connected to a series of car break-ins.

The break-ins happened in Kirkwood last Wednesday and the thieves targeted 14 cars. Police say some cars had been left unlocked, but in other cases the thieves smashed windows or broke locks on doors. The suspects stole electronics, cash, and credit cards--one of the cards was used to make three purchases at a Wal Mart in Jefferson County.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kirkwood Police Department at (314) 984-6902.
