SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A southwest Missouri youth football coach accused of kidnapping and killing a 10-year-old girl is now facing rape and sodomy charges.

Greene County prosecutors added the new charges against 46-year-old Craig Michael Wood of Springfield on Monday. Court documents indicate the additional charges in the February death of Hailey Owens stem from newly available autopsy results.

Hailey was abducted while walking home from her best friend's house, just two blocks from her own home. Neighbors reported watching in horror and unsuccessfully giving chase as Hailey was pulled into a pickup truck that sped away.

She was found dead hours later in the basement of Wood's home.

Wood is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Thursday. His public defender says he plans to ask for a delay because of the new charges.

SPRINGFIELD, MO (AP) – A Missouri judge says prosecutors don’t have to provide evidence before the preliminary hearing for a 46-year-old man accused of killing a 10-year-old Springfield girl.

Craig Michael Wood faces first-degree murder charges in the Feb. 18 death of Hailey Owens, who was killed after being abducted in her neighborhood. Wood, a middle-school football coach, attended the hearing Wednesday in Greene County court. Wood is being held without bond.

The Springfield News-Leader reports Judge Mark Powell on Wednesday overruled a defense motion to have the prosecution produce evidence before Wood’s preliminary hearing, which has been rescheduled for April 24.

The judge also said he would take under advisement an objection by Wood’s public defender to having television cameras in the courtroom for future hearings on the case.

Accused child killer Craig Wood made his first court appearance in a video  arraignment today (Friday) in a Springfield, MO court. T
The Springfield News Leader reports that Wood was formally charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and child kidnapping in the death of 10-year-old Hailey Owens.
Hailey was abducted and killed Tuesday evening in Springfield. Eight of Hailey’s family members attended the arraignment.
Wood has requested a public defender to handle his case, but Greene County prosecutor Todd Myers challenged that request after he said police found evidence Wood has a $1 million trust in his name.
Myers said Wood “clearly had the means” to pay for his own defense and that it would be an “inappropriate use of public funds” for Wood to be granted a public defender.
The question of whether Wood is eligible for a public defender will be addressed in a court hearing at 9 a.m. on March 19.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Police say the body of a missing 10-year-old girl has been found in southwest Missouri.
Police Chief Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams says search crews found a body they believe is Hailey Owens inside a suspect's Springfield home on Wednesday.
Witnesses told police that Hailey was taken by a man in a pickup truck Tuesday evening.
Forty-five-year-old grade school coach Craig Michael Wood is jailed on suspicion of first-degree murder in Hailey's disappearance. Wood was arrested late Tuesday inside a vehicle parked outside his house. Formal charges have not been filed.
The Springfield School District says Wood is a coach and teacher's aide at a school for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Hailey did not attend that school, and Williams says the two apparently didn't know each other.
