   St. Louis County Police say a bomb scare that forced the evacuation of about 30 Spanish Lake residents Tuesday afternoon was a false alarm.  

   It began about 4:30 p.m. at a home in the 1400 block of Twillman Avenue. 

   Investigators say family members had been going through the belongings of an elderly man who'd recently died when they came upon a box marked 1954.  The relatives had already found blasting caps nearby and they initially thought the pipes and other materials in the box were old explosives. So they called police.  

   The County's Bomb and Arson Squad was called in and an area of about 300 yards around the home was evacuated.  

   The elderly gentleman had been a pilot and it turned out the box contained old aircraft parts and not  explosives. 

Residents in one north city neighborhood are back in their homes after a car crash forced their evacuations. It happened at Theodore and Oriole in the Walnut Park neighborhood about 7:30 Wednesday evening.

St. Louis police say a car struck a Laclede Gas service pipe. There was initial concern about a possible gas leak. Half a dozen nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Laclede Gas crews determined that there was no gas leak, so the residents were allowed back home.

There's no word what led to the crash.

Good news for drivers in Washington County, Illinois. Eastbound I-64 has reopened after being closed for several hours due to a toxic spill near Centralia.

Fire crews had evacuated residents near the interstate Tuesday evening after a tanker truck hauling toxic material began leaking. Authorities say the evacuations were just precautionary.

Eastbound I-64 was closed for several hours between mile markers 61 and 69 while the material was offloaded to another truck and the road was washed down. The interstate reopened a little before 3:00 a.m.
