The St. Louis Community College system has new leadership.  Interim Chancellor Dennis Michaelis began his new job Monday.

The former Texas college officials was tapped to replace Myrtle Dorsey, who left in late September after the Board of Trustees voted not to renew her contract.

Michaelis told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he doesn't expect to hold the post for more than 18 months.  He Said his focus will be on improving communications and rebuilding the public image of the system.

The college's image suffered a blow after the bungling of the investigation of a student assault on the Meramec campus in April became known.

George Wassen, president of the Meramec campus, resigned shortly after the attack.  The police chief at Meramec and two other officials were fired.

Embattled St. Louis Community College chancellor Myrtle Dorsey will likely keep her job another year.  That's despite criticism of the college's handling of an attack on a female student on the Meramec campus.

Critics say the suspected assailant shouldn't have been let go by campus police after he was initially picked up and students and staff should have been alerted to the attack right away.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the new chairman of the college Board of Trustees, Craig Larson expects Dorsey to complete the third year of her contract.   Larson told the paper that the final report on ans investigation into the incident will be out next month, and that could lead to personnel changes, but probably not involving Dorsey.

There's more fallout from an attack on a student inside a community college restroom.

St. Louis Community College Chancellor Myrtle Dorsey announced in a letter Monday that the president of the Meramec campus, where the attack occurred, has resigned.  Meramec President George Wasson's resignation is effective immediately.

This follows sharp criticism about the college’s handling of the attack.  The suspect, 18 year old Jevon Mallory, had been taken into custody, immediately after the incident, but was released by campus police with a warning.

He was re-arrested five days later and is currently in jail, facing felony assault charges.

Another issue of contention is the fact that no campus alerts had been issued after the attack.

Wildwood Campus President Pam McIntyre will take over as interim president of the Meramec campus during a search for Wasson’s replacement. Wildwood’s vice president will be interim president of that campus.
