UPDATE: Report: Snowden drops Russia asylum bid

Tuesday, 02 July 2013 04:30 Published in National News

MOSCOW (AP) - NSA leaker Edward Snowden has reportedly dropped his bid for asylum in Russia.

Russian news agencies are quoting President Vladimir Putin's spokesman as saying that Snowden withdrew his request when he learned about the terms Moscow has set out.

Putin said on Monday that Russia is ready to shelter Snowden as long as he stops leaking U.S. secrets.

Meanwhile several of the other countries where the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks says Snowden gas applied for asylum have said he cannot apply from abroad.

Officials in Germany, Norway, Austria, Poland, Finland and Switzerland say he must make his request on their soil.

Cupples demolition to begin this week

Tuesday, 02 July 2013 04:25 Published in Local News

Demolition of the long-neglected Cupples building is expected to get underway this week.

The seven-story building at 11th and Spruce was condemned in 2008 over fears it would collapse.

The last attempt to revitalize it died last week when the City of St. Louis and Vertical Realty Advisors couldn't come to terms on a $40 million plan to save the building.

Spirtas Wrecking Company will spend the next three months tearing it down.  Spirtas crews plan to salvage much of the building's red brick and some of the heavy-timber frame.
