As GOP jostles, Quinn has $2.9M in campaign fund

Wednesday, 16 October 2013 07:11 Published in Local News

CHICAGO (AP) - Gov. Pat Quinn has $2.9 million in his 2014 campaign fund - more than all four of his Republican rivals combined.

Reports filed with the state late Tuesday show the Chicago Democrat raised about $813,000 during the three-month period ending Sept. 30. He has no major challenger in the March primary since Bill Daley abandoned his bid.

Four Republicans are seeking the GOP nomination.

Billionaire businessman Bruce Rauner (ROW'-nur) raised about $1 million during the third quarter. But he spent $1.1 million, leaving him with about $594,000.

State Treasurer Dan Rutherford (ROOTH'-ur-furd) raised about $337,000 and finished the period with about $1.2 million.

State Sen. Bill Brady raised $66,000 and had about $273,000 on hand.

State Sen. Kirk Dillard brought in about $314,000 and finished with about $205,000.

Task force aims at reducing youth violence

Tuesday, 15 October 2013 10:11 Published in Local News

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, nearly 150,000 St. Louisans under the age of 17 live in neighborhoods with risk factors that contribute to youth violence. Today community leaders gathered in Forest Park to outline a plan to combat the problem.

It's called the St. Louis Regional Youth Violence Prevention Task Force and it's designed to help young people stay out of trouble. Among the goals are prevention, intervention, enforcement, and reentry into the community. St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley says education is another key aspect to the program.

"Keeping young people in school, that is paramount, that has to take precedent," Dooley said. "If they stay in school and get educated, they have the opportunity to be productive citizens and get meaningful jobs, and that's the key."

The youth violence task force runs until the summer of 2016. It's being funded by a public/private partnership.

Monsanto HQ target of weekend protest

Monday, 14 October 2013 09:15 Published in Local News

CREVE COEUR, Mo. (AP) - The world headquarters of agriculture company Monsanto was the site of a weekend demonstration organized by opponents of genetically modified food.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (bit.ly/1cg8Kro) reports that 500 demonstrators marched to the company's Creve Coeur global headquarters, where they chanted anti-Monsanto slogans and waded into street traffic Saturday.

Organizers of the "March Against Monsanto" want the company to label food containing genetically modified ingredients.

Monsanto released a statement before the protest in which it highlighted its "contribution to improving agriculture by helping farmers produce more from their land while conserving natural resources such as water and energy."
