ST. LOUIS (AP) — The man widely hailed as the greatest St. Louis Cardinal of them all will be honored at the team's home opener on Monday.

The Cardinals are starting the season with six road games before hosting Cincinnati in a Monday afternoon game. Before the game the team will honor Stan Musial, the Hall of Famer who died in January at age 92.

The Cardinals said Friday that Musial's four children will unveil an outfield wall marker as part of Opening Day ceremonies that begin at 2:30 p.m. The Budweiser Clydesdales will make their traditional Opening Day march around Busch Stadium, and the Cardinals in the Hall of Fame will circle the ballpark in a motorcade.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals will wear a patch on their left sleeve this season to honor the memory of Stan Musial.

The Hall of Famer widely considered the greatest Cardinal player ever died in January.

To honor his memory, the Cardinals will debut the patch in the season opener Sunday at Arizona.

The patch is unusual for one honoring a deceased icon: There is no black, a nod to Musial's always-sunny disposition. It features a red border and Musial's number 6, in red, with his signature through the number.

The background of the patch is the color of the jersey - gray for road games, white for home, and cream-colored when the Cardinals wear their new alternate jersey.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A proposal to name a new Mississippi River bridge for the late St. Louis Cardinals great Stan Musial is moving ahead in the Missouri Senate.

The measure was approved by the Senate's transportation committee last week and has been placed on the Senate's debate calendar. It's not clear when the full chamber might take it up.

Musial died last month at age 92. A movement quickly began to name the new Interstate 70 bridge over the Mississippi for the seven-time National League batting champion.

Lawmakers in both Missouri and Illinois would have to approve the name. The bridge is expected to open sometime next year.

The Missouri Senate bill is sponsored by Republican Eric Schmitt, of St. Louis County. A similar bill has been introduced in the Missouri House.

His Eminence, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York and long-time friend of the Musial family, will join the Father Robert J. Carlson the Archbishop of St. Louis, and Bishop Richard Stika in celebrating the Mass.

Lindell Boulevard will be closed between Taylor and Newstead following the Basilica’s regularly scheduled 8 a.m. Mass. The funeral is private and by invitation only.

Immediately following the Mass, the funeral procession will make its way to Busch Stadium where the family will lay a wreath at the base of the Stan Musial Statue as part of a prayer ceremony before proceeding to a private burial. Fans wishing to view the procession are encouraged to do so outside of Busch Stadium along 8th Street and be in place by 12:30 P.M.
